Our Indonesian joint venture, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), was recently honored as “The Best Mining Company in Environmental Compliance” by Majalah Tambang, one of the most influential and respected mining magazines in Indonesia. This prestigious award recognizes PTNNT’s outstanding environmental management at our Batu Hijau mine. Nominees are evaluated by government officials, journalists, and representatives from non-government organizations (NGOs).

PTNNT not only was recognized as “The Best Mining Company in Environmental Compliance,” but also was a nominee in two other categories: “Best Mining Practice and Good Governance” and “Best in Implementing CSR (corporate social responsibility).”

PTNNT operates the Batu Hijau mine, which is a large copper and gold deposit in Indonesia that Newmont discovered in 1990. In 2011, Batu Hijau produced 283 million pounds of copper and 318,000 ounces of gold. In addition to the recognition by Majalah Tambang, PTNNT also has received several other awards from the Indonesian government and third parties. In the last decade, the company has been recognized more than 20 times for demonstrating leadership in safety, community development, corporate responsibility and environmental management programs.
