Newmont Urges Commitment to Dialogue Process in Cajamarca Region of Peru

Newmont fully supports the dialogue process and believes that constructive engagement — not confrontation and violence — is the most productive way to resolve issues. We encourage all parties to act responsibly and exercise restraint to give the dialogue a chance to succeed. Newmont is committed to playing a constructive role and will continue supporting the ongoing dialogue. As a signatory to and participant in the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR), Newmont also re-affirms its commitment to protecting human rights.

Following the international experts’ review of Conga’s EIA, which was approved in October 2010, we announced that we will take a slower approach to developing the Conga copper and gold project, with an initial focus on building water reservoirs. The reservoirs will improve year-round water availability to downstream users who currently only have water flowing during the rainy season. We remain committed to fostering a suitable social environment before progressing the project toward the construction of mining facilities. Construction on the project will continue only if it can be done in a safe, socially and environmentally responsible manner with risk-adjusted returns that justify future investment.
