Richard O'Brien

President and Chief Executive Officer
Richard O’Brien was elected president and chief executive officer in 2007, having previously served as president and chief financial officer and executive vice president and chief financial officer during 2006 and 2007, and as senior vice president and chief financial officer from 2005 to 2006. Mr. O'Brien was executive vice president and chief financial officer of AGL Resources in Atlanta, Georgia from 2001. Mr. O'Brien previously served in senior executive positions for Mirant (formerly Southern Energy, Inc.) and PacifiCorp. He has over 20 years of broad financial and operational experience in the energy, power and natural resources businesses. A graduate of the University of Chicago, Mr. O'Brien received his bachelor of arts degree in economics. He also holds a doctor of jurisprudence degree from Lewis and Clark College, Northwestern School of Law.
Russell Ball
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Russell Ball was elected executive vice president and chief financial officer in October 2008, after having served as senior vice president and chief financial officer since 2007, vice president and controller from 2004 to 2007. Previously, he had served as group executive, Investor Relations, and as financial director and controller for Newmont's Indonesian business unit. Mr. Ball joined Newmont in 1994 as senior internal auditor after practicing as an accountant with Coopers and Lybrand in Durban, South Africa. He holds a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Natal (South Africa) and is both a chartered accountant in South Africa and a certified public accountant in the United States.
Randy Engel
Executive Vice President, Strategic Development
Randy Engel was elected executive vice president, Strategic Development in September 2008, after having served as senior vice president, Strategy and Corporate Development since 2007. Mr. Engel has been with the company since 1994, and has served in various capacities in the areas of business planning, corporate treasury and human resources. Mr. Engel holds a Master's of Science in finance earned from the University of Denver, and a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Colorado.
Carlos Santa Cruz
Senior Vice President, South American Operations
Dr. Carlos Enrique Santa Cruz was elected senior vice president, South American Operations in October 2008, after having served as vice president, South American Operations since 2001. Prior to that he was general manager of Minera Yanacocha S.R.L., a joint venture mining operation in Northern Peru, in which Newmont holds a 51.35 percent interest. Dr. Santa Cruz joined Minera Yanacocha in 1992 as operations manager. He was named assistant general manager in 1995 and general manager in 1997. He holds a master's degree in mining engineering from Michigan Technological University and a master's degree in industrial engineering and a doctoral degree in mining engineering from Pennsylvania State University.
Guy Lansdown
Executive Vice President, Discovery & Development
Guy Lansdown was elected executive vice president, Development in October 2008, after having served as senior vice president, Project Development and Technical Services since 2007. He previously served as vice president, Project Engineering and Construction from 2006 to 2007, and as project executive on the $1.5 billion Boddington project in Australia. Prior to this, he held key project and operating positions for Newmont throughout the world including Indonesia, Peru and Australia. He joined Newmont in 1993 as project manager for Minera Yanacocha after serving as an associate for Knight Piesold and manager of projects for Group Five in South Africa. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and a Master of Science in project management from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.
Jeffrey R. Huspeni
Senior Vice President, African Operations
Jeffrey R. Huspeni was elected senior vice president, African Operations in October 2008, having served as vice president, Exploration Business Development from 2005 to 2008, and as vice president of Mineral District Exploration from 2002 to 2005. Previously, he served as vice president, Exploration; vice president, Business Development; vice president of Mine Geology; and director of Mine Geology. He joined Newmont in 1982. Prior to joining Newmont, Mr. Huspeni worked as an exploration geologist for several firms. He holds a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Minnesota and a master's degree in geology from the University of Michigan.
Timothy Netscher
Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific Operations
Timothy Netscher was elected senior vice president, Asia Pacific Operations in May 2009. He brings over 35 years experience in the resources industry, spanning the gold, platinum group metals, nickel, cobalt and coal industries in South Africa, Indonesia, the USA and Australia. Prior to Newmont, he held positions as Managing Director of Vale Australia, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of PT Inco in Indonesia, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of QNI Pty Limited and Executive Director of Impala Platinum Limited. Mr. Netscher has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of South Africa and an MBA from the University of Cape Town.
Michael J. Byrne
Vice President, Health, Safety and Loss Prevention
Michael J. Byrne was elected vice president, Health, Safety and Business Excellence in 2008. Mr. Byrne served as global group executive HSLP and Continuous Improvement from 2005 to 2008 and global director HSLP from 2003 to 2005. Mr. Byrne also held various safety management positions at Compañía Minera Antamina (Peru), WMC Resources (Australia) and Fording Coal (Canada). Prior to his employment in the mining industry, Mr. Byrne served as a search and rescue specialist with the Canadian Armed Forces. Mr. Byrne holds a Bachelor of Science degree in occupational health and safety from Curtin University of Technology (Australia).
Gerald Gluscic
Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Information Technology
Gerald Gluscic was elected vice president and chief information officer, Information Technology in 2008. Mr. Gluscic joined Newmont from Swift Transportation, where he served as executive vice president of Business Transformation. Prior to his position at Swift, he served as vice President and chief information officer for Phelps Dodge Corporation for 7 years, and added responsibilities for Global Supply Chain and Financial Shared Services. He also was chief information officer at Phelps Dodge / Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold. Mr. Gluscic was previously vice president and CIO of Borden Foods Corporation, and held executive leadership positions with Kellogg Company in Latin America, Asia, and in Europe and Africa. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Indiana State University.
David V. Gutierrez
Vice President, Planning and Tax
David V. Gutierrez was elected Vice President, Planning and Tax in November 2009, having served as Vice President, Accounting and Tax from 2007 to 2009 and Vice President, Tax from 2005 to 2007. Prior to joining Newmont, he was a partner with KPMG LLP from 2002 to 2005, serving as the Denver office tax managing partner from 2003 to 2005. Prior to that, he was a partner with Arthur Andersen LLP and was the Denver office tax managing partner from 1997 to 2002. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Detroit and a Juris Doctorate degree from DePaul University. Mr. Gutierrez is a certified public accountant.
Thomas P. Mahoney
Vice President and Treasurer
Thomas Mahoney was elected a vice president in 2002. He has been treasurer since 2001. Previously, he served as corporate assistant treasurer from 1996 to 2001. Mr. Mahoney joined the company as assistant treasurer, International, in 1994. Prior to that, he served as vice president, Corporate Banking for Continental Bank N.A. He holds a degree in mining engineering from the University of Arizona and an M.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame.
Tom McCulley
Vice President, Discovery & Development, Business & Planning Services
Tom McCulley was elected vice president, Discovery & Development, Business & Planning Services in April 2009. Mr. McCulley joined Newmont in 2000 and was project director for the construction of the Boddington mine in Australia. Prior to joining Newmont, he worked for Fluor on various large projects, focusing on project controls and management. He holds bachelor degrees in business and accounting from Mount Saint Mary's University.
Grigore Simon
Vice President, Generative Exploration
Grigore Simon was elected vice president, Generative Exploration, in April 2009. Previously, he served as general manager, Generative Exploration, from 2007 to 2009, and as chief geoscientist of the Global Exploration Solutions group from 2004 to 2007. Prior to joining Newmont, Mr. Simon had exploration management positions with Shell International in Angola and Saudi Arabia since 1998. He also worked as an exploration geologist for several mining firms and as assistant professor of economic geology at the University of Bucharest. He holds an engineering degree in geology and geophysics from the University of Bucharest, Romania; a master's degree and Ph.D. in geology from the University of Michigan; and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Rochester and University of Nyenrode, Netherlands.
Alan R. Blank
Executive Vice President, Legal and External Affairs
Alan R. Blank was elected executive vice president, Legal and External Affairs in October 2008, after having served as senior vice president, Legal and External Affairs since July 2008. Prior to joining Newmont, Mr. Blank was a member at the law firm of Stoel Rives LLP in Portland, Oregon, where he practiced since 1988. His practice included mergers and acquisitions, finance and commercial transactions. Mr. Blank was the lead lawyer for the $9 billion sale of PacifiCorp by Scottish Power plc to MidAmerican Energy in 2005-2006. He earned a law degree from Washington University School of Law and received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Washington University.
Brian Hill
Executive Vice President, Operations
Brian Hill was elected executive vice president, Operations in October 2008, after having served as vice president, Asia Pacific Operations since January 2008. Previously, he served as the managing director of LionOre Australia, and chief executive officer and managing director of ASX-listed Equatorial Mining Limited. Mr. Hill also served in a number of senior executive positions with Falconbridge Limited in Australia, Canada and Chile and has more than 25 years of experience in operations, project development and corporate development in the mining industry. He holds a master's of business administration degree from the University of Western Ontario and a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering from Queen's University. Mr. Hill is also a registered professional engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada.
Bill MacGowan
Executive Vice President, Human Resources
Bill MacGowan was elected executive vice president, human resources in 2010. Prior to joining Newmont, Mr. MacGowan served as chief human resources officer and executive vice president, people and places, for Sun Microsystems, where he oversaw a staff of 750 and an annual operating budget of $600 million. In addition, Mr. MacGowan was responsible for Sun’s $1.2 billion real estate portfolio, encompassing five campuses and 12.5 million square feet.
With more than 25 years of human resources experience, Mr. MacGowan has a history of aligning people strategies with business results and creating a diverse, engaging and collaborative culture. In 2007, he received the Diversity Best Practices Legacy Award for lifetime achievements on behalf of women, minorities and people of color in the workplace. Mr. MacGowan earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Claremont McKenna College.
Thomas R. Kerr
Senior Vice President, North America Operations
Thomas Kerr was elected senior vice president, North American Operations in January 2010, after having served as vice president, Newmont USA Limited, North American Operations since December 2008. Mr. Kerr had served as Phoenix Project Manager, Senior Manager-Surface Operations and General Manager-Twin Creeks Operation from 2004 to 2008. Mr. Kerr joined Newmont in 1980 and has served in various high-level engineering and mine management capacities. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering from Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology and a Diploma in Mining Engineering Technology from British Columbia Institute of Technology.
David A. Baker
Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer
David A. Baker has been vice president and chief sustainability officer since June 2008, after having served as vice president, Environmental Affairs and Sustainable Development since 2004. He had served as vice president of Environmental Affairs from 1991 until 2004. He also served as vice president of Environmental and Government Affairs from 1998 to 2001. Mr. Baker received his Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the University of Arizona and completed the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program in 1997.
David Faley
Vice President, Corporate Development
David Faley was elected vice president, Corporate Development, in July 2007. Mr. Faley previously served as group executive, Newmont Capital from July 2004 to June 2007, and vice president, Newmont Capital-Australia from 2003 to 2004. Mr. Faley was director, Land for Newmont from 1996 to 2003, and manager of Lands, U.S. from 1993 to 1996. Prior to joining Newmont in 1988, Mr. Faley held various managerial positions at W. E. Mays & Associates, a consulting land firm, since 1983. Mr. Faley graduated from the William O. Douglas Honor's College at Central Washington University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in geography and land studies.
Stephen P. Gottesfeld
Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs
Stephen P. Gottesfeld was elected vice president, Communications and Public Affairs in 2006. He served as associate general counsel from 2004 to 2006, responsible for Newmont's Latin American, African and Central Asian legal offices. From 2002 to 2004, Mr. Gottesfeld was Newmont's associate general counsel and general manager of Newmont Peru S.R.L. Mr. Gottesfeld spent three years of his career with Newmont in Lima, Peru. Prior to joining Newmont in 1997 as senior counsel, Mr. Gottesfeld was an associate at the law firm of Holland & Hart LLP. He earned a law degree and a master's degree in international affairs from the University of Denver in 1993 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from The Colorado College in 1989.
Roger Johnson
Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer
Roger Johnson was elected vice president and chief accounting officer in 2008. Mr. Johnson previously served as controller and chief accounting officer in 2007 and assistant controller from 2004 to 2007. He also served as the operations controller and the regional controller, Australia from 2003 to 2004. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Johnson served as senior vice president, Finance and Administration at Pasminco Zinc, Inc. from 2002 to 2003. He also served in various capacities, including vice president Finance and Control for Kennecott Corporation, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto PLC, from 1989 to 2002. Mr. Johnson, a certified public accountant in the United States, practiced public accounting with Coopers & Lybrand from 1979 to 1989. Mr. Johnson holds both a master’s of professional accountancy degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Utah.
John Seaberg
Vice President, Investor Relations
John Seaberg was designated vice president, Investor Relations in 2008, having previously served as group executive, Investor Relations since 2007. Since July 2006, he had served as group executive, Internal Audit. Prior to that, he served as the director of Corporate Development. Mr. Seaberg joined Newmont in 1994 as an internal audit manager and later became financial manager, Newmont Capital. He holds a master's of business administration from the University of Denver, and a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Colorado State University.
Jay S. Layman
Vice President, Discovery and Development Solutions & Innovation
Jay Layman was elected vice president, Discovery and Development Solutions and Innovation in April 2009 after having served as group executive, Corporate Development, since 2007 and director of Studies in 2007. From 2001 to 2007, he was regional vice president Australasia for Quadrem; vice president of Corporate Development for Hecla Mining and president of Tactical & Strategic Advisory Services. From 1996 through 2001, he held various positions in operations and projects for Newmont in Uzbekistan and Indonesia. From 1989 to 1996, he worked in both finance and operations with Pegasus Gold including being general manager of CIS Operations out of Kazakhstan. Prior to 1989, he was operations manager for two small underground mining companies. Mr. Layman earned a Master's of Business Administration degree in finance from Eastern Washington University, as well as bachelor degrees in business administration and mechanical engineering from Washington State University.
Jeffrey K. Reeser
Vice President and Secretary
Jeffrey Reeser was elected vice president and secretary in 2009, having served as assistant general counsel and assistant secretary since 2007. Prior to joining Newmont, Mr. Reeser held legal director positions at Sun Microsystems, Inc., and the law firms of Baker & Hostetler, LLP, and Parcel, Mauro, Hultin & Spaanstra, P.C., where his practice included corporate and mining law. He holds a law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree in business finance from the University of Colorado.
Cindy Williams
Vice President, Business Opportunity Creation
Cindy Williams was elected vice president, Business Opportunity Creation, in April 2009, after serving in group executive and senior director roles since 2007. Ms. Williams has been with the company since 1992, holding positions in open pit and underground production geology, near mine exploration, due diligence and early project development. She led discovery and development teams in Peru and Ghana. Prior to joining Newmont, Ms. Williams worked as an exploration geologist for several firms. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in geology and a master’s degree in economic geology from Colorado State University.
